Description
Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and holds the largest baroque old town in eastern Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of some fifteen hundred buildings spread over a plan that grew without straightening, so the lanes still bend the way they did when the city was the seat of a grand duchy running from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Over twenty churches stand inside it. Across a stream the Užupis quarter declared itself a republic in 1997 and nailed its constitution to a wall in several languages.
