Description
Klaipėda is the only seaport in Lithuania and was Memel under Prussian and German rule until 1923, which shows in the half timbered warehouses of the old town and a street plan that belongs to a north German trading city rather than a Lithuanian one. Ferries to the Curonian Spit leave from the middle of town and cross in five minutes. The Sea Museum and dolphinarium occupy a nineteenth century fort on the spit side. In summer the Sea Festival fills the quays for three days.
