Description
Kernavė is an archaeological site on a terrace above the Neris north west of Vilnius and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first capital of the Lithuanian state before the court moved to Trakai and Vilnius. Five hillforts stand in a row on the valley edge, grassed mounds with flat tops that once carried timber fortifications and now read as a set of green pyramids over the river meadow. Little else survives above ground. Midsummer is marked here with the Rasos festival, the largest pagan revival gathering in the country.
