Description
Kaunas is the second city of Lithuania and was its provisional capital between the wars, when Vilnius was held by Poland. That period left it a whole quarter of interwar modernist architecture, built fast and confidently by a young state, and the ensemble was inscribed by UNESCO in 2023 as Modernist Kaunas. A medieval old town sits at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris with a red brick castle at the tip. Two funiculars from the twenties still climb the valley sides. Devils fill a museum built around one collector's obsession.
