Description
Nida sits near the southern end of the Lithuanian half of the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Russia and one of the strangest landforms in Europe, a sand bar ninety eight kilometres long and at points barely four hundred metres wide, holding back a lagoon from the open Baltic. Drifting dunes buried whole villages here before pine planting stabilised them in the nineteenth century. Parnidis dune still moves. Thomas Mann built a summer house above the lagoon in 1930 and wrote part of a novel in it.
