Description
The Troodos Mountains fill the centre of Cyprus and rise to Mount Olympus at almost two thousand metres, high enough to hold snow and run the island's only ski lifts in winter. Black pine and cedar forest covers the slopes, cut by waterfalls and a dense network of nature trails. Ten small painted churches scattered through the valleys carry UNESCO World Heritage status for their Byzantine frescoes, and the great monastery of Kykkos guards the island's most venerated icon. Stone wine villages such as Omodos and Lofou sit among terraced vineyards on the southern flank. Mountain guesthouses stay open year round.
