Description
The Akamas Peninsula is the wildest coast in the Republic of Cyprus, a protected headland of gorges, juniper scrub and cliffs where the paved road simply stops. The Lara beaches are the island's main nesting ground for green and loggerhead turtles and stay closed to vehicles through the nesting season. The Blue Lagoon at Fontana Amorosa draws boats from Latchi for its clear shallow water. Inland the Avakas Gorge narrows to a slot barely wide enough to walk, and the Aphrodite and Adonis trails climb through wildflowers to viewpoints over the whole peninsula. Water and shade are scarce on every one of these routes.
