Description
Paphos (Pafos) is the archaeological heart of Cyprus and the whole town carries UNESCO World Heritage status. The park beside the harbour holds Roman villas whose floor mosaics of Dionysus, Theseus and Orpheus are among the finest in the Mediterranean, and the Tombs of the Kings cut a necropolis of underground courtyards straight into the rock. A small medieval fort closes the harbour. Nearby the sea stack of Petra tou Romiou is named as the birthplace of Aphrodite. Behind the resort strip the Akamas hills and hill villages start almost immediately. The town splits into the harbour quarter below and the older upper town.
