Description
Trelleborg is a ring of earth two hundred and forty metres across, thrown up around the year 980 and laid out with a precision that still surprises. Four gates on the compass points, two streets crossing at the centre, and sixteen boat shaped longhouses in four squares of four, every one of them measured in the same unit. It was garrison, workshop and statement at once, built as the Danish kingdom was being made, and abandoned within a generation. One longhouse has been rebuilt at full size outside the rampart. UNESCO listed the ring fortresses in 2023.
