Møns Klint

Møns Klint is a range of brilliant white chalk cliffs on the east coast of the island of Møn in southern Denmark, rising to about 128 metres above the Baltic Sea. Crowned by beech forest and edged by turquoise shallows, it is one of the most striking natural landscapes in the country.

The cliffs were pushed up and folded by the glaciers of the last Ice Age, and fossils from the ancient chalk sea wash out onto the beach below. GeoCenter Møns Klint presents this history with exhibitions on geology, fossils and the forces of ice. Long wooden staircases lead from the forest down to the shore, and viewpoints such as Dronningestolen and Sommerspiret look along the white walls. Above the cliffs, the Klinteskoven beech forest, orchid meadows and the hilly Høje Møn area invite walks. Liselund, a romantic landscape park with a thatched manor house, lies just north, and Klintholm Harbour offers fish, a beach and boat trips. Thanks to very little light pollution, Møn and the neighbouring island of Nyord form a Dark Sky Park for stargazing, and Nyord's village and meadows are known for birdlife.

Møn is reached by bridge, and Møns Klint is a long day trip or a rewarding weekend from Copenhagen. The cliff edge erodes and parts can fall, so marked paths and signs must be respected. Summer is popular, while spring and autumn bring calm forest walks and dark winter skies.
