Description
Elsinore (Helsingør) lies at the narrowest point of the Øresund Strait and is one of Denmark’s most historic towns. It is best known for Kronborg Castle, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Renaissance fortress that Shakespeare made famous as the setting of Hamlet. For centuries, the castle controlled maritime traffic between the North and Baltic Seas by collecting the Sound Dues, helping to make the Danish kingdom one of Northern Europe’s leading powers. Beyond Kronborg’s atmospheric casemates and the statue of the legendary hero Holger Danske, visitors can explore the well-preserved old town with its half-timbered houses and the striking M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, ingeniously built into a former dry dock.
