Copenhagen

Copenhagen (København) is the capital of Denmark and the country's political, cultural and economic centre on the Øresund. Canals, copper spires and wide harbour basins frame a compact city that is easiest to explore by bicycle or on foot.

Royal and civic history is close at hand. Christiansborg Palace houses parliament, Amalienborg is the residence of the royal family with its changing of the guard, and Rosenborg Castle keeps the crown jewels in the King's Garden. The colourful gables of Nyhavn, the spiral spire of the Church of Our Saviour, the Round Tower and the Marble Church shape the skyline. Copenhagen is also a city of design, food and everyday water life. New Nordic cooking, bakeries, the Torvehallerne market and harbour street food sit beside clean harbour baths where locals swim in summer. Freetown Christiania, green parks and the Botanical Garden show a more relaxed side.

The metro, trains and an extensive cycle network connect the districts and the airport. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and the old amusement park at Bakken make easy excursions. Tivoli and many outdoor activities follow seasonal opening periods, while museums, cafés and harbour walks work in every season.
