Description
Sozopol (Созопол) is the oldest town on the Bulgarian coast, founded by Greek colonists from Miletus as Apollonia Pontica, and it has kept a character the big resorts never had. The old town fills a small peninsula with narrow lanes of stone-based houses whose dark timber upper storeys overhang the street, a form protected as an architectural reserve. Two sandy bays lie on either side of the neck. Offshore the island of Saint Ivan yielded relics attributed to John the Baptist. An arts festival fills the town each September. The town divides plainly into the old peninsula and the newer quarter behind the bays.
