Description
Bansko (Банско) is the busiest ski resort in Bulgaria, a stone-built town at the foot of the Pirin range whose gondola climbs from the edge of the old quarter to a bowl of runs above two thousand metres. The season is long and the prices are a fraction of the Alps, which fills the town with skiers from across Europe. Below the lift the cobbled centre keeps its heavy revival houses, a fortified church and a run of mehanas serving grilled meat. In summer the same slopes open onto the Pirin National Park and its glacial lakes. The town keeps its own kitchen and dialect.
