Description
Nessebar (Несебър) stands on a rocky peninsula joined to the mainland by a narrow causeway, and its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a concentration of churches unmatched on this coast. More than forty were built here across a thousand years, and around a dozen survive in whole or in part, their walls banded in brick and stone and set with green ceramic discs. Timber-framed revival houses with overhanging upper storeys lean over cobbled lanes above the sea. Ancient Greek and Roman walls run into the water at the entrance to the town. The peninsula is small and fills quickly.
