Description
Burgas (Бургас) is the gateway to the southern Black Sea coast and the arrival point for most of its beach traffic, a port city that keeps a pedestrianised centre, a long wooden pier and a shaded sea garden along the shore. Three salt lakes ring the town and sit on the Via Pontica migration route, which makes the area one of the best places for birdwatching in Europe, with pelicans and storks passing in enormous numbers. The old salt pans at Atanasovsko are still worked by hand, and the mud from them is used for bathing. The city is unpretentious and used as a base.
