Santiago de los Caballeros, often simply called “Santiago”, is the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic and the economic, cultural, and academic center of the fertile Cibao Valley. The city is known for the imposing Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, the renowned Centro León, its vibrant arts and music scene, and its rich tobacco and cigar-making tradition. Santiago combines modern Dominican city life with regional culture, historic neighborhoods, and a colorful carnival, whose distinctive “Lechones” with their horned masks are among the most iconic symbols of local tradition.
