Santa Bárbara de Samaná, , often simply called “Samaná”, is the capital of the province of the same name and an important hub for nature experiences in the northeast of the Dominican Republic. The port town is picturesquely situated on Samaná Bay and is best known for humpback whale watching, with the whales migrating to the region’s warm waters each year between January and March. Samaná combines Caribbean tranquility and everyday Dominican life with a lush tropical landscape of beaches, waterfalls, mangroves, and dramatic karst formations. Popular excursions include El Limón Waterfall, Los Haitises National Park, the island of Cayo Levantado, and Playa Rincón near Las Galeras. The town is one of the main gateways to the remarkable natural diversity of the Samaná Peninsula.
