Description

Santa Cruz de Barahona, often simply called “Barahona”, is a coastal city in the southwest of the Dominican Republic and the main gateway to one of the country’s most diverse and unspoiled regions. Set between the Caribbean Sea and the foothills of the Sierra de Bahoruco, the city is known for its Malecón and its proximity to dramatic coastlines, rivers, mountains, and national parks. The region is the world’s unique source of the sky-blue gemstone Larimar and offers remarkable natural attractions, from freshwater pools and tropical forests to coffee-growing areas and rich birdlife. Barahona is an ideal base for exploring the spectacular coastal road toward Paraíso and Oviedo, as well as the Sierra de Bahoruco and the saltwater Lake Enriquillo.
