Description
Salto is the second city of Uruguay and the centre of its thermal belt, where deep bores tapping the Guaraní aquifer feed a string of hot spring resorts along the Uruguay river. Termas del Daymán just south of town is the busiest, a village that exists entirely for its pools. Arapey to the north is quieter and set among eucalyptus. This is the one part of the country whose season runs opposite to the coast, with the pools at their best in the cool months. Citrus groves and the Salto Grande dam fill the country around. Several resorts keep their pools open at night.
