Description
Punta del Diablo is the last village before the Brazilian border and grew from a shark fishing settlement into the backpacker capital of the Uruguayan coast, still built almost entirely of wooden cabins on sand tracks. Fishing boats are winched straight up the beach in the middle of the village. Three beaches face different directions, which means one of them always has surf and another is always sheltered. Immediately north the Santa Teresa national park covers a headland of planted forest, dunes and a Portuguese fortress above the sea. In January the village multiplies in size and in winter it nearly empties.
