Description
Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and holds nearly half the country's population, a low unhurried city strung along twenty kilometres of riverfront promenade called the Rambla. The Ciudad Vieja keeps art deco and neoclassical facades in various states of repair, and the Mercado del Puerto beside the harbour is a hall of wood-fired parrilla grills where the country's beef is the whole point. Football matters here more than almost anywhere, and the Estadio Centenario hosted the first World Cup final. Candombe drumming fills the streets of Palermo and Barrio Sur on summer evenings. The city is flat and nothing feels rushed.
