Description
La Paloma is the main resort of the Rocha department and the point where the developed coast gives way to the wild one, a low town of pine and eucalyptus between a rocky headland and a run of open beaches. Its lighthouse stands on the point where the Atlantic swell first hits, and the surf beaches on either side are the reason the town fills. Neighbouring La Pedrera is the smaller and more bohemian of the pair. Behind the dunes the Laguna de Rocha holds flamingos, black-necked swans and one of the country's richest bird populations. Everything lies within a walk of the point.
