Fray Bentos

Description
Fray Bentos is a river port whose name went around the world on tins of corned beef, and the factory that produced them is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Anglo meat plant processed cattle from the whole region and shipped it to Europe for a century, and the complex survives almost intact with its machinery, cold stores, laboratories and the company housing around it. The guided route through the killing floors and the boiler house is unusually frank about the industry. The town itself keeps a riverside promenade and a small theatre. A guided visit takes most of a morning.
