Description
Carmelo lies on the Uruguay river among the channels of the Paraná delta and is the centre of the country's oldest wine region, a quiet town of sandy streets where the tannat vine grows on both sides of the arroyo. Boutique bodegas open their cellars for tastings and lunch under the vines, and several have rooms among the rows. A wooden swing bridge crosses the stream to a long beach on the river. The delta islands are reached by boat, and the crossing to Tigre in Argentina leaves from here. Distances here are short and the roads between the bodegas are unpaved.
