Description
Portobelo is a historic coastal town on Panama’s Caribbean coast, combining colonial heritage, Afro-Panamanian culture, and tropical nature. Once an important port of the Spanish Empire, it is known for its UNESCO-listed fortifications, which protected silver, gold, and other treasures on their journey to Spain. Portobelo is also an important center of the traditional Congo culture and is renowned for the venerated Black Christ. Its sheltered bay, offshore islands, and coral reefs also make it an attractive destination for boating, snorkeling, and diving.
