Description
The Darién is one of Central America’s largest wilderness regions, stretching across eastern Panama to the border with Colombia. The region is known for its vast tropical rainforests, exceptional biodiversity, and Darién National Park, Panama’s largest protected area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jaguars, tapirs, harpy eagles, and numerous other rare species inhabit its forests, alongside Indigenous Emberá and Wounaan communities. The Darién Gap also forms the only major break in the Pan-American Highway between North and South America. Remote and largely accessible only by river or on foot, the Darién remains one of Central America’s most significant expanses of tropical rainforest.
