Description
Chitré is the cultural center of the Azuero Peninsula and an important heartland of Panamanian traditions. The city and its surroundings are known for the elaborately handcrafted pollera dress, colorful festivals and carnival celebrations, and traditional arts and crafts. The historic San Juan Bautista Cathedral overlooks the central plaza, while the nearby archaeological site of Monagrillo preserves some of the earliest known pottery in Central America. The surrounding towns of La Arena, Parita, and Villa de Los Santos are renowned for pottery, folklore, and their distinctive devil masks. Chitré blends colonial heritage with Indigenous and Iberian influences and serves as an ideal gateway to the rich culture and traditions of the Azuero Peninsula.
