Short description of Mutsamudu

Mutsamudu has the best preserved old town in the archipelago, a warren of seventeenth century Shirazi houses with carved doors running up the hill from the quay. The citadel above it was raised in the eighteen sixties against Malagasy raiders and its ramparts are open to anyone who walks up, unguarded and slowly decaying. This is also the only deep water port in the whole country, which is why the boats between the islands tie up here rather than anchoring off. Behind the town the island climbs steeply to waterfalls and to the ylang ylang distilleries.
