Short description of Moroni
Moroni is a small capital of coral stone built along a black lava shore, and the arcaded medina behind the harbour is the densest old town in the archipelago. The Friday mosque on the waterfront dates from the fifteenth century and its whitewashed arcade is the image the country uses of itself. Volo Volo market sells vanilla, cloves and ylang ylang from the plantations inland. Dhows are still built and beached by hand at the old port. The harbour has no deep water quay, so ships anchor offshore and everything comes in by barge or launch.
