Short description of Domoni
Domoni was the capital of Anjouan before Mutsamudu took the title and it still has the older of the two old towns, a quarter of coral stone houses and carved doors above a rocky shore. The sultans lie buried here and so does Ahmed Abdallah, the president assassinated in nineteen eighty nine, whose white mausoleum stands beside the sea. The road over from Mutsamudu climbs through clove and ylang ylang plantations and takes about three quarters of an hour. Moya on the south coast, the best beach on the island, is reached the same way.
