Description
Montagne Pelée is the volcano that destroyed Saint-Pierre in 1902 and it still smokes quietly at 1397 metres, the highest point on Martinique. UNESCO listed it in 2023 together with the older Pitons du Carbet to the south, for the volcanic landforms and for a forest that runs unbroken from the shore to the summit with the full range of Lesser Antillean endemics in it. Three marked routes climb from L'Aileron, Grande Savane and the Morne Macouba, taking three to five hours and often ending in cloud. Le Carbet and Saint-Pierre lie on the coast below.
