Description
Grand-Rivière is the last village on the north coast, at the end of the road with cliffs and rainforest closing in behind it and no way onward except on foot. The coastal trail from here to Anse Couleuvre takes five hours through forest above the sea and is the best walk on Martinique. Fishermen launch yoles through the surf from a black sand beach below the village and will run walkers round the headland by boat instead. On a clear day Dominica stands on the horizon across the channel. Buses reach the village from Basse-Pointe along the Atlantic road.
