Short description of Lethem
Lethem is the border town of the far south, a grid of low buildings on open savannah where a bridge over the Takutu carries the road into Brazil and most of the shopping goes the other way. It is the end of the long laterite road from the coast and the supply point for every ranch and village in the Rupununi. At Easter the rodeo brings in vaqueros from both sides of the river and fills up the whole town. Waterfalls lie in the hills east of it. The heat here is dry rather than heavy.
