Description
Lake Enriquillo (Lago Enriquillo) in the southwest of the Dominican Republic is the largest lake in the Antilles and one of the Caribbean’s most unusual landscapes. The highly saline lake lies below sea level in an arid basin between two mountain ranges, surrounded by salt flats, thorn scrub, and sparse vegetation. Lake Enriquillo is known for its American crocodiles, rhinoceros iguanas, rare Ricord’s iguanas, and numerous waterbirds, including flamingos. Isla Cabritos, in the middle of the lake, forms the heart of this remarkable protected landscape. The drive along the lakeshore through the arid Valle de Neiba, with the mountains of Haiti on the horizon, passes through one of the Caribbean’s most striking and otherworldly landscapes.
