Description
Hvide Sande exists because of a hole cut through the dunes in 1931 to let Ringkøbing Fjord drain into the North Sea, and the town grew around the sluice and the fishing harbour beside it. That leaves it with sea on one side and forty kilometres of shallow brackish lagoon on the other, which is why every second car on the road carries a kite or a board. The fjord is waist deep for hundreds of metres and holds a steady onshore wind. The beach on the sea side runs unbroken in both directions for as far as anyone wants to walk.
