Description
Kamphaeng Phet (กำแพงเพชร) on the Ping River is one of the three historic cities of the UNESCO World Heritage Site associated with Sukhothai and was once an important southern frontier city of the Sukhothai Kingdom. The city is known for its impressive fortifications, weathered laterite ruins, and historic temples. The old walled city contains Wat Phra Kaeo and other archaeological remains, while the wooded Aranyik district north of the walls is home to Wat Chang Rop, with its chedi surrounded by 68 elephant figures, and Wat Phra Si Iriyabot. Kamphaeng Phet combines history, Buddhist art, and a peaceful landscape of forest and ancient ruins.
