Description
Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra are two remarkable megalithic temple complexes in southern Malta and rank among the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world. Built from massive limestone blocks during the 4th and 3rd millennia BCE, the monumental sites bear witness to Malta’s sophisticated prehistoric temple culture. Mnajdra is particularly fascinating for its striking alignment with the rising sun, whose light reaches along the temple’s central axis at the equinoxes. Set amid the dramatic landscape of Malta’s southern coast, the temples bring together prehistoric architecture, ancient religious traditions and enduring archaeological mysteries. Since 1992, they have formed part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Megalithic Temples of Malta and rank among the most important surviving monuments of European prehistory.
