Description
Ġgantija near Xagħra on Gozo is one of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable prehistoric sites, comprising two monumental megalithic temples built between around 3600 and 3200 BC. The complex ranks among the world’s earliest known free-standing stone structures and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Megalithic Temples of Malta”. Massive limestone blocks define the temples and inspired the local legend of giants as their builders. The apsidal chambers were probably used for religious rituals, although their exact purpose remains unknown. A visitor centre explores Gozo’s Neolithic heritage, while the nearby Ta’ Kola Windmill, built in 1787, offers a glimpse into the island’s rural past.
