Description
Dajabón is the main crossing point on the Dominican border with Haiti, a hot northwestern town built along the Massacre River whose name recalls a colonial slaughter and the killings ordered under Trujillo. Twice a week the bridge opens and thousands of Haitian traders pour into the binational market, one of the busiest in the Caribbean, where produce, clothing, plastics and electronics change hands in a vast covered hall beside the water. On other days the town is quiet, with a shaded central park, the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario and the Beller battlefield monument. Dajabón offers the most direct look at how the two countries of Hispaniola actually meet.
