Description
Saint-Pierre is the capital of the south and the liveliest town on Réunion after dark, a grid of creole streets behind a harbour and a lagoon beach where the whole island seems to gather at weekends. Its Saturday market fills the seafront boulevard with fruit, spices and rum. The Tamil temple, the mosque and the church stand within the same few blocks, and a Chinese cemetery lies above the town. Saint-Pierre is the practical base for the volcano road and the wild south coast beyond it. The town works as a base for the whole southern half of the island.
