Description
Washington Slagbaai covers the whole northern fifth of Bonaire and was the first nature sanctuary in the Netherlands Antilles, made in 1969 out of two former plantations that grew aloe, divi-divi pods and goats. Two one-way gravel routes run through it, a short green one and a long yellow one, both needing a high vehicle, past salt lagoons with flamingos, a blowhole at Supladó and the beaches at Wayaka and Boka Slagbaai where the snorkelling is as good as anywhere on the island. Brandaris, at two hundred and forty one metres, is the top of Bonaire.
