Description
The southern end of Bonaire is a flat salt landscape of evaporation ponds, white pyramids of harvested salt and a beach whose sand carries a faint pink from crushed coral and shell. Along the road stand four rows of stone huts barely a metre and a half high, built in 1850 to shelter enslaved salt workers who walked here from Rincon each Monday and back each Saturday. Behind the pans the Pekelmeer lagoon holds one of only four Caribbean flamingo breeding grounds in the world.
