Description
Wadi Halfa is Sudan's northern gateway, a low town on the shore of Lake Nubia where the ferry from Aswan ties up after crossing the flooded valley. The original settlement lies under the water, drowned when the Aswan High Dam filled the lake, and the present town was rebuilt on higher ground with its Nubian population resettled far to the south. Fishermen work the lake for Nile perch and the shoreline is otherwise bare desert. Travellers use it as the crossing point into Egypt, and a few reach the rock temples and forts further upstream.
