Description
Naqa is a Kushite temple site in open desert east of the Nile, one of the three components of the UNESCO listed Island of Meroe. Its Lion Temple carries reliefs of the god Apedemak shown as a lion headed man and of King Natakamani and Queen Amanitore, whose figures are cut at equal size on either side of the doorway. Beside it stands the Roman Kiosk, a small chapel that mixes Egyptian cavetto cornices with Greek columns and Roman arches. A larger temple of Amun with an avenue of rams lies a short walk away across the sand.
