Description
Khartoum (الخرطوم) is Sudan's capital, built at the point where the Blue Nile arriving from the Ethiopian highlands meets the White Nile coming up from the equatorial lakes. The two waters run side by side in visibly different colours before merging, and the confluence at Mogran is the sight the city is named for, since al-khartum means elephant's trunk after the shape of the spit. The National Museum holds the rescued temples of Buhen and Semna alongside Kushite statuary. Riverside avenues, the Nile bridges and a busy café culture define daily life in the centre.
