Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls

Zimbabwe · Matabeleland North · 915 m

Description

Victoria Falls is where the Zambezi drops a hundred metres into a crack in the basalt across a front nearly two kilometres wide, and the local name for it, Mosi-oa-Tunya, means the smoke that thunders. Zimbabwe holds about three quarters of the face, so the long rainforest walk with sixteen viewpoints along the gorge is on this side and the spray falls on it hard enough to soak you in April. The town behind has become the adventure capital of the region, with rafting, bungee, helicopters and river cruises, and elephants walk through it at night.
