Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

Bulawayo

Zimbabwe · 1358 m

Description

Bulawayo is the second city of Zimbabwe and was laid out with streets wide enough for a wagon and a full span of oxen to turn in, which is still the first thing anyone notices. It was the industrial and railway capital of the country and much of that has gone quiet, leaving a centre of unusually intact colonial architecture and a slower pace than Harare. The Natural History Museum is the best in southern Africa outside Pretoria, and the railway museum keeps Rhodes’ private coach. The city is also the base for Matobo, half an hour to the south.
