Description
Gonarezhou is the southeastern lowveld park, five thousand square kilometres of mopane and baobab along the Save and Runde rivers, and it is the emptiest of Zimbabwe’s big parks. The name means place of many elephants and the herds here were shot at heavily during the war years, so they stayed wary of vehicles far longer than elsewhere. The Chilojo Cliffs, a wall of red sandstone standing several kilometres along the Runde, are the image the park is known by. It forms part of the transfrontier park with Kruger and Limpopo and closes in the rains.
