Description
Vega (Vegaøyan) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site off Norway’s Helgeland coast, encompassing around 6,500 islands, islets, and skerries. The archipelago represents a 1,500-year-old coastal culture that combines fishing, farming, and the traditional harvesting of eiderdown. Small shelters and nesting houses, known as “e-hus”, provide breeding sites for eider ducks. After the birds leave, the valuable down is collected and cleaned. The main island of Vega is characterized by open coastal landscapes, green farmland, mountains, and skerries. The wider region is also home to the Seven Sisters and Torghatten, with its natural rock tunnel, iconic landmarks of the spectacular Helgeland coast.
